How Does It Work?

The machine works by creating microtrauma to the affected area, which thus stimulates blood flow and thereby promoting tissue healing.

In chronic pain, the shock waves create a new inflammatory process, which then ‘kick starts’ the brain to react by sending the necessary nutrients to promote healing.

Research has proven its effectiveness, and we have already been getting great results for our patients.

What can Shockwave Therapy be used for?
  • Shoulder tendonitis / calcification
  • Plantar fasciitis / foot pain
  • Tennis elbow / Golfers Elbow
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Hip Bursitis
  • Trigger Points, and much more.
When Shockwave Therapy Cannot Be Used
  • Over or near bone growth centre until bone growth is complete
  • When a malignant disease is in or near the treatment area
  • Infection in the area to be treated
  • Over ischemic tissue in individuals with vascular disease
  • Patient has coagulation disorder or taking anti-coagulant meds
  • Patient has a prosthetic device in the area to be treated.
  • Fetus in the treatment area

What does it feel like?
You may experience mild discomfort during the treatment, however, it is easily tolerated.
As the area becomes desensitized, the initial discomfort typically fades as it is being treated. Your Shockwave Therapist will adjust the intensity of shockwaves based on your comfort level, and to minimise discomfort, your therapist can gradually ramp it up.

How long before I know it’s working?
Effects start to occur after just 1 session. Most patients will notice a significant improvement in their pain symptoms & recovery within 3-4 sessions & a full treatment course is approximately 12 sessions. Your Physiotherapist will likely combine this with other modalities of treatment to give you the best outcome.
