Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is documented to be at least 5,000 years old and is considered by many to be the most advanced form of natural, medical treatment in the world. In fact, over one quarter of the world’s population have witnessed the positive effects of TCM in their everyday life. One of the most popular forms of TCM treatment is acupuncture, which can be used for a wide range of injuries, illnesses and ailments.

Right here in Gladstone the revered team at the newly renovated ‘Active Physio Health’ Clinic welcomes an exciting new addition, Anna-Jeanne Day, a recently qualified Acupuncturist (Bachelor of Health Science: Acupuncture.)  She has studied in both Australia and China and is now ready to help the Gladstone community improve their health and well-being.

In Australia and other Western countries, there has existed a level of scepticism towards TCM and acupuncture. However, acupuncture has rapidly grown in popularity over the past few decades as it has become recognised as a successful and effective form of complementary medicine. The establishment of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, currently being implemented, reflects this growth in interest. Membership of this national body will be compulsory from the 1st of July this year, requiring practitioners to have achieved a four year Bachelor of Health Science or equivalent, before they can provide treatment. In addition to the confidence inspired by the increased requirements of regulation and training, this rapid growth can be attributed to the multiple evidence-based studies that have provided scientific proof that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of many health issues.

As a result of this evidence, most health funds now provide rebates for members being treated by a registered practitioner. In fact, Acupuncture has become so popular as a complementary treatment that many doctors now recommend its use as part of a Western medical treatment plan. Unfortunately, it is not yet being fully utilised as a large number of the population do not understand what acupuncture is and how effectively it can be used.

From a western perspective, the practice of acupuncture is focussed on the insertion of very thin, flexible needles into the skin at specific points for the purpose of treating various disorders. This stimulates nerve impulses and multiple other mechanisms which can have an affect on hormonal secretions and can release endorphins which helps with pain management. However, there is more to it than that. As with all TCM practices, acupuncture employs a holistic approach to health. A qualified practitioner utilises various techniques including ‘cupping’ and traditional ‘spoon scraping’ therapy (Gua Sha) which increase blood flow to affected areas’.  Electro-acupuncture, moxibustion, Tui Na massage, lifestyle and dietary advice are used in conjunction with needling in order to treat a wide variety of injuries and health complaints or simply improve your quality of life.
